The Marconi Memorial

Those people living in Essex may have noticed from the leading local paper, that a big effort is being made to have a permanent memorial to our Founder in the centre of Chelmsford. Vice Chairman Peter Turrall is leading this campaign and already major support has been received from both the Essex Chronicle and the local radio station BBC Essex.  Under the Chairmanship of Martin Easteal Chief Executive of Chelmsford Borough Council, a small Committee has been formed to examine the various proposals and to make a positive recommendation.  The Committee consists of representatives from the local Marconi Companies, Chelmsford MP Simon Burns, BBC Essex, Patrick Bermingham from the Chelmsford Society, Chelmsford Borough Museums Service and Marconi Veterans Peter Turrall.

The Committee will meet in July or August to discuss the various thoughts of local people following an Essex Chronicle questionnaire, which set out various proposals.  Apart from a window in Writtle Church, and the naming of a local road, nowhere in the County Town is our Founder recognised nor those of other famous Chelmsford Industrialists, Crompton, Christy and Hoffman.

Depending on the memorial chosen, the cost might have to be met by donations from local organisations and also from public subscriptions. Keep an eye on the local press over the next few months.
