Arthur Spooner 1934 – 2009

arthur_spooner_webArthur was born in Aldershot and moved to Malta in 1939; he was on a voyage to Malta when war broke out but the captain decided to carry on to Malta as it was nearer than England.  He spent the entire duration of the war in Malta.

After the war the family spent some time in Guernsey before moving to Essex and settling in Tollesbury.  Here Arthur joined the Boy’s Brigade before doing his National Service in the RAF.  He was stationed in Ceylon as a telecommunications officer, reaching the rank of corporal until he was invalided out.

In 1955 after the RAF, Arthur joined  Marconi Communication Systems Limited, staying in Chelmsford during the week and cycling back to Tollesbury at weekends.

In the early days of his career he travelled extensively installing various Company products in many countries of the world but mainly Africa and Europe and the Middle East.  While working in Jordan he had the privilege of meeting the King of Jordan.  In the later years he was a Charge-hand in the New Street factory responsible for the assembly of many products including Communication and Television items.

He always loved sport and in the early sixties started playing hockey for Marconi’s.  In the late sixties he turned his attention to what was to become his lifelong passion, bowling.  As a member of the Marconi Bowls Section based at Waterhouse Lane, Chelmsford, Arthur represented Essex on numerous occasions and, more than many, played his part in the organisation and running of the Club including the lovely Pavilion.  He was at one time, Chairman, President and keeper of the Bar which he ran for any function which was held at the Pavilion.  His wife Dot organised all the refreshments and was always on hand when matches or other events took place to supply the food etc.  Both Arthur and Dot were responsible for the ordering of all refreshments and liquor used on the premises.  Arthur was very sad when the builders who had occupied the Waterhouse Lane site following the demise of The Marconi Company, were unable to permit the Marconi Bowls Club to continue.  Arthur and his Committee fought very hard and tried all possible means to preserve this club, but without success.

One of the highlights of the Marconi Bowls Club for which Arthur was very proud, was the Annual Match between the President’s Team (This being our late Life President of The Marconi Company Sir Robert Telford) and The Marconi Bowls Club, captained by Arthur himself.  This was always a fine match and invariably close enough for The President’s team to win so that the President had to stand the cost of drinks all round.

Arthur joined the Marconi Veterans Association Committee in 2000 and one of his early commitments was to take on the task of Master of Ceremonies for the Annual Reunion held in April each year at The Marconi Social Club in Beehive Lane Chelmsford.  Arthur always performed this task well and assisted with the Raffle and indeed he supplied a number of the Spirits which were given as prizes.

In 2006 he had a triple heart bypass but recovered to be able to carry on his bowling.  Unfortunately, his bowls became secondary when he took on the full-time care of his wife Dot after her stroke.  Nevertheless, he still found time to support the Baddow Bowls Club and the Marconi Veterans Association.

Arthur will be sorely missed, not only from his Bowling friends at the many Clubs where he played, but also from members of The Marconi Veterans Association Committee.
